We Care – A Practical Guide to Patient SensitivitySM A Dialysis Staff Training Program Here’s an Excerpt from the Program . . . The first thing we need to realize is that Dialysis Takes Courage! Courage on the part of everyone involved – the patients . . . and . . . the staff.
Dialysis is basically about the will
Dialysis is a challenge for those who depend on it and those who administer this delicate treatment. As in any setting where life-or-death possibilities exist, stress factors can run high for everyone involved. For staff members, in particular, the pressure can seem overwhelming . . . leaving these essential caregivers with the feeling they have nowhere to turn. And leaving their patients feeling lost, anxious, angry, abused, depressed or simply ignored. Patients arrive at the clinic with many needs . . . not just the need for dialysis, but also with other human and emotional needs. There’s often a perception among the staff members that we can’t really do much for the dialysis patient. Actually, there’s a great deal we can do . . . but in order to do it, we have to adopt a new way of looking at our patients and a new way of thinking about our own roles and responsibilities. How are You Dealing with Patient Sensitivity Issues? The focus of this video-based training program is patient sensitivity and customer service. The purpose is to remind your staff of the difficulties the dialysis patient faces because of his or her disease and the need to be on dialysis. It points out the basic needs of each patient and how the failure to have those needs met can result in disruptive behavior. It also serves as a reminder that the patient is the reason we are in business.
